Once again the beginning of the new catechetical year
affords us an opportunity to make religious education a priority in the lives
of our children by bringing them to Sunday School on a regular basis. Sporadic
attendance (once monthly or five times a year) as manifested in the past by many
of our students will not make them knowledgeable in the Word of God and the tenets
of our faith. Now is the moment when we need to reflect upon the importance of
providing them with the spiritual strength that they will need to make good life
choices in today's permissive society. The home and the church need to establish
a symbiotic relationship so that our children can
lay the foundation for a life-long commitment to living their Orthodox faith.
We need to become champions of our faith and role models for our children by honoring the Lord's Day even if it means sacrificing some of the school/community activities that are scheduled on Sunday mornings.
This year we are making structural changes to some of our classes in order to provide an environment that will facilitate a more meaningful curriculum. We will also be combining classes so that those students who attend every Sunday (God-willing this will encompass the entire school population) will be able to enjoy the fellowship of many of their peers instead of learning in isolation.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on September 19,
Presbytera Helen Diavatis
